7 answersCan I use the CHN220CAF in an Eaton BR series loadcenter?
No. This breaker features a 3/4-inch CH frame and is exclusively designed for Eaton and Cutler-Hammer CH series loadcenters. It will not fit in BR series panels, which require 1-inch breakers.
Will this pigtail neutral breaker work in a Plug-On Neutral (PON) panel?
Yes. While the CHN220CAF features a pigtail neutral, it is fully compatible with both standard Eaton CH loadcenters and Type CH Plug-On Neutral panels. The pigtail wire simply connects directly to the panel neutral bar.
What is the difference between a standard breaker and this Combination AFCI?
Standard breakers only trip during overloads or short circuits. The CHN220CAF is a Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (CAFCI), meaning it also detects both parallel and series arcing faults to help prevent electrical fires in residential wiring.
Does the CHN220CAF provide GFCI protection for wet locations?
No. This is strictly a Combination Arc Fault (AFCI) breaker. If your circuit requires both arc fault and ground fault protection, you will need a dual-function (AFCI/GFCI) breaker or a separate GFCI receptacle.
Can I use this breaker to replace an older Cutler-Hammer CH AFCI?
Yes. Eaton acquired Cutler-Hammer, and their CH series products are fully interchangeable. The CHN220CAF is the direct replacement for older 20A, 2-pole Cutler-Hammer CH arc fault breakers with pigtail neutrals.
How do I wire the pigtail neutral on the CHN220CAF?
The coiled white pigtail wire must be routed and secured directly to the neutral bus bar in your loadcenter. The circuit neutral wire then connects to the designated neutral terminal on the breaker itself.
Can the CHN220CAF be used for multi-wire branch circuits (MWBC)?
Yes. As a 2-pole breaker with a common trip mechanism, it is suitable for 120/240V multi-wire branch circuits where two 120V circuits share a single neutral wire. This ensures both hot legs disconnect simultaneously if a fault occurs.
