Rated for 70 amps, the Federal Pacific HEF437070 is a three-pole molded case circuit breaker built for heavy-duty commercial applications. It allows contractors to service older infrastructure safely. This bolt-on MCCB is engineered to fit seamlessly into classic FPE panelboards. It replaces the standard NEF437070 and crosses over with the UBIF070. Equipped with fixed thermal and magnetic trip functions, the breaker achieves a 42kAIC rating at 240VAC and accommodates 4-1/0 AWG conductors.
What type of panelboards accept the HEF437070 circuit breaker?
This breaker is designed exclusively for legacy Federal Pacific (FPE) commercial and industrial panelboards configured for H-Frame bolt-on breakers. It will not fit in standard residential load centers or other manufacturers' enclosures.
Is the HEF437070 part of the Federal Pacific Stab-Lok series?
No. The HEF437070 is a commercial H-Frame molded case circuit breaker with a bolt-on connection. It is structurally and functionally distinct from the residential FPE Stab-Lok plug-on breakers and is used in heavy-duty industrial applications.
How does the system voltage affect the interrupting rating of this breaker?
The fault-clearing capacity depends on the operating voltage. On a 480VAC system, the breaker provides a 22kAIC rating. When installed on a 240VAC system, the interrupting capacity increases to 42kAIC. Ensure the available fault current at the panel does not exceed these values.
What are the termination requirements when using aluminum conductors?
The factory lugs accept 4 AWG to 1/0 AWG copper or aluminum wire. When terminating aluminum conductors, electricians must wire-brush the stripped wire and apply a listed oxide-inhibiting joint compound before torquing the lugs to ensure a secure, corrosion-resistant connection.
Can this bolt-on breaker be installed in an energized panel?
No. Because the HEF437070 must be mechanically bolted directly to the panelboard busbars, the entire panel must be de-energized and properly locked out prior to installation to eliminate arc flash and shock hazards.
What protection does the fixed LI thermal-magnetic trip unit provide?
The LI designation means the breaker includes Long-Time (L) and Instantaneous (I) trip functions. The thermal Long-Time element protects against sustained overloads, while the magnetic Instantaneous element clears severe short circuits. Both thresholds are fixed at the factory for this 70A model.
Can I substitute a different FPE frame type for the HEF437070?
No. The HEF437070 is specifically an H-Frame breaker. Other legacy FPE frame types have different physical dimensions and busbar mounting configurations and cannot be used as direct substitutes in the same panel space.
