Built to support existing power systems, the Federal Pacific HJL432175 is a 3-pole, 175A MCCB delivering essential overcurrent defense for classic FPE distribution equipment. Designed as an exact-fit component, this breaker mounts into legacy Federal Pacific panelboards and switchboards. The bolt-on configuration ensures a secure connection for older infrastructure. Delivering 22kAIC at 480VAC, the H-frame device utilizes proven thermal-magnetic trip technology for heavy-duty loads.
What enclosures are compatible with the HJL432175?
This breaker is designed for use in legacy Federal Pacific panels and switchboards that accept H-Frame molded case circuit breakers.
How does the HJL432175 mount into the panel?
It features a bolt-on connection, meaning it secures directly to the busbar in compatible Federal Pacific distribution equipment using bolted hardware rather than a plug-on mechanism.
What does the LI trip function indicate on this breaker?
The LI designation means it is equipped with a thermal magnetic trip unit providing Long-Time protection against continuous overloads and Instantaneous protection against sudden short circuits.
Is the trip unit on the HJL432175 adjustable?
Yes, it features a fixed thermal element for overload protection and an adjustable magnetic element, allowing electricians to fine-tune the instantaneous short circuit trip threshold.
Are there direct newly manufactured replacements for the Federal Pacific HJL432175?
Because Federal Pacific is no longer in business, exact replacements are sourced from existing legacy stock. If an original HJL frame is unavailable, upgrading the panel or installing a certified retrofit kit from a modern manufacturer is required.
Can I use this breaker in a 240V or 208V system?
Yes, while it is rated for a maximum of 480VAC, it can be safely applied in lower voltage AC systems such as 240V or 208V, provided the available fault current does not exceed its 22kAIC rating.
What does the 22kAIC rating mean for this Federal Pacific breaker?
The 22kAIC rating indicates the maximum fault current, 22,000 amps, that the breaker can safely interrupt at 480VAC to clear a fault and protect the circuit.
Can I install the HJL432175 in a modern Square D or Eaton panel?
No. This breaker is specifically molded for legacy Federal Pacific enclosures. It will not physically fit or safely connect to the busbars of modern Square D, Eaton, or Siemens panels.
What does the HJL prefix designate in the catalog number?
The HJL prefix identifies the specific frame type within the Federal Pacific H-Frame family of molded case circuit breakers, which dictates its physical dimensions and busbar mounting configuration.
