Part of the legacy Murray EP series, this 3-pole 225A molded case circuit breaker provides reliable main service protection for commercial and industrial applications. This plug-on MCCB mounts seamlessly into compatible Murray load centers, serving as an exact fit for older installations. It is fully cross-referenced to be replaced by the newer MP3225 or Q3225 models. Rated for 10kAIC at 240VAC, the HACR-rated breaker accommodates 2 AWG to 300 kcmil wiring via included line-side lugs.
What panels are compatible with the EP3225 circuit breaker?
The EP3225 is designed for 3-phase Murray Rock Solid load centers. It is also compatible with Siemens EQ III, PL, and ES series load centers, functioning primarily as a main breaker or a high-amperage branch breaker.
Does the EP3225 replace older Murray main breakers?
Yes, this breaker serves as a direct replacement for the legacy MBK3225 main breaker kit. It ensures continued compatibility and code compliance for older 3-phase Murray panelboards.
What are the wire size requirements for the EP3225?
The factory-installed lugs accept aluminum or copper conductors ranging from 2 AWG to 300 kcmil. When wiring for 225A service, always verify your conductor sizing against current NEC ampacity tables and apply the correct torque to prevent terminal failure.
Is a hold-down kit required when installing this breaker?
When installing the EP3225 as a plug-on main breaker, the National Electrical Code requires a retaining kit, such as the ECMBR2 for Murray Rock Solid panels, to securely fasten it to the base pan. Branch breaker installations generally do not require a retainer.
Can this 240V breaker be used on a 120/208V system?
Yes. With a maximum rating of 240V AC, this 3-pole breaker is fully compatible with 3-phase 120/208V Wye systems, which are common in commercial and light industrial service entrances.
How does the thermal-magnetic trip unit operate on this breaker?
The EP3225 uses fixed long-time and instantaneous (LI) trip functions. The thermal mechanism responds to sustained overloads by heating and tripping the breaker, while the magnetic mechanism provides immediate interruption during severe short-circuit faults up to 10kAIC.
Can the EP3225 be installed in a single-phase load center?
No. This is a 3-pole breaker designed specifically for 3-phase systems. Single-phase 120/240V residential load centers require a 2-pole main breaker.
Can the EP3225 be reverse fed?
Yes. Breakers in the Murray EP series do not have line and load side restrictions, meaning they can be reverse fed. This capability is essential when utilizing the unit as a plug-on main breaker in a load center.
