Built for high-fault commercial and industrial applications, the Siemens CED63B040 is a 40A, 3-pole molded case circuit breaker. As a current-limiting device within the Sentron ED Frame lineup, it minimizes thermal and magnetic stress on downstream circuits during short-circuit events. The breaker utilizes a bolt-on mounting style for secure installation in compatible Siemens panelboards. It features fixed thermal and magnetic trip settings for reliable LI protection.

Product FAQs
8 answers
Which panelboards are compatible with the CED63B040 circuit breaker?
This bolt-on breaker is designed specifically for use in Siemens Sentron panelboards and switchboards. It is not compatible with standard residential plug-on load centers.
What type of wire can be used with the lugs on this breaker?
The factory-installed lugs accept wire sizes from 10 AWG up to 1/0 AWG. They are rated for use with both copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) conductors.
How does the current limiting feature of the CED63B040 operate during a fault?
As a current limiting breaker, it clears short circuits extremely fast to restrict the peak let-through current. This reduces thermal and magnetic stress on downstream equipment, providing enhanced system protection.
Is the CED63B040 suitable for direct current (DC) systems?
Yes, it carries DC ratings of 50kAIC at 250VDC and 30kAIC at 500VDC, making it suitable for specific industrial DC applications as well as standard AC systems.
Can I adjust the trip settings on the CED63B040?
No, this breaker features a thermal magnetic trip unit with fixed thermal and fixed magnetic settings. It does not offer field-adjustable trip dials.
What protection does the LI trip function provide?
The LI designation means the breaker includes Long-Time (L) protection for sustained overloads and Instantaneous (I) protection to quickly clear severe short circuits.
Can I use this CED frame breaker to replace an older ED4 or ED6 breaker?
The CED frame is part of the Siemens Sentron ED frame group and shares the same physical footprint as ED4 and ED6 breakers. However, the CED is a current limiting version with higher interrupting ratings, so you must verify that your panel and system coordination allow for this specific upgrade.
How does this breaker mount into the panel?
The CED63B040 utilizes a bolt-on connection. It must be securely bolted directly to the busbars in a compatible Sentron panelboard or switchboard.
