Built for specialized applications, the Eaton GFEP230 delivers 30mA ground fault equipment protection in a 30A, two-pole design. Unlike standard 5mA GFCIs, this unit prevents nuisance tripping on machinery with higher natural leakage currents. It mounts into Eaton Type BR load centers using a plug-on connection and pigtail neutral. Rated for 10 kAIC at 120/240V, it provides reliable overload and equipment-level ground fault defense. This specific model is replaced by the newer BRN230EP.

Product FAQs
7 answers
Is the GFEP230 suitable for hot tubs or spas requiring personnel protection?
No. The GFEP230 is a Ground Fault Equipment Protector (GFEP) with a 30mA trip threshold, designed to protect equipment. It does not provide the 5mA Class A personnel protection required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) for hot tubs, spas, or bathroom receptacles.
What applications require a 30mA GFEP breaker instead of a standard GFCI?
A 30mA Ground Fault Equipment Protector (GFEP) is typically used for heat trace systems, snow melting equipment, well pumps, and roof de-icing cables. These applications naturally leak more current to ground, which would cause a standard 5mA GFCI breaker to experience nuisance tripping.
What is the purpose of the coiled white wire on this breaker?
The pigtail neutral wire must be connected directly to the neutral bar in your load center. This connection is required to power the internal ground fault detection circuitry, even if the load itself does not utilize a neutral wire.
How is this breaker wired for a straight 240V load without a neutral?
Connect the two hot wires to the load lugs on the breaker and route the equipment ground to the panel ground bar. The breaker's white pigtail wire must still be connected to the load center neutral bar to power the internal ground fault sensors.
Will this breaker fit in older Bryant or Westinghouse panels?
Yes. Eaton Type BR circuit breakers are compatible with legacy Cutler-Hammer, Bryant, and Westinghouse load centers that accept 1-inch plug-on Type BR breakers.
Can I install this breaker in a Square D or Siemens panel?
No. The GFEP230 is designed exclusively for Eaton, Cutler-Hammer, Bryant, and Westinghouse Type BR load centers. It is not UL-classified for use in panels manufactured by Square D, Siemens, or other brands.
Can I use the GFEP230 to replace a standard BR230 circuit breaker?
Yes, if your application now requires the addition of 30mA ground fault equipment protection. The physical footprint and plug-on connection are identical to a standard 2-pole 30A Type BR breaker, but you must also connect the attached neutral pigtail for the ground fault circuit to function.
