Product FAQs
7 answers
Can I install the Challenger C220 in an Eaton BR load center?
Yes. Eaton Type BR load centers are UL listed to accept Challenger Type C circuit breakers. They share the exact same physical footprint and plug-on mounting design.
Will the Challenger C220 fit in a Square D Homeline or Siemens panel?
No. While it has a similar 1 inch per pole plug-on design, the C220 is only UL listed for use in Challenger Type C, Eaton Type BR, and Westinghouse Type BR load centers.
What is the modern replacement for the Challenger C220?
The Eaton BR220 is the direct, modern equivalent. Eaton acquired the Challenger line and integrated it into their Type BR series, making the BR220 a verified substitute for the C220.
What wire sizes are compatible with the C220 breaker?
The box lugs on this breaker accept #14 to #4 AWG copper or aluminum wire. For a standard 20A circuit, 12 AWG copper wire is most commonly used, though you should always verify with local electrical codes.
Is the Challenger C220 HACR rated?
Yes, this breaker is HACR rated. It is approved for use with heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment that requires this specific type of circuit protection.
What is the interrupting capacity of the C220?
It features a 10kAIC rating at 120/240VAC. This 10,000 amp short circuit interrupt rating is standard for most residential and light commercial load centers.
What does the thermal magnetic trip function on the C220 do?
The thermal magnetic mechanism provides two layers of protection. The thermal element responds to prolonged overloads, while the magnetic element trips instantaneously during severe short circuits.
