Product FAQs
6 answers
What type of panels or enclosures is the FDC2040L designed for?
This F-Frame breaker is designed for use in Eaton Series C panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers. Because it is a unit mount (feed-thru) breaker, it is typically installed using cable-in and cable-out connections rather than bolting directly to a panelboard bus.
What does the FDC prefix indicate compared to other Series C breakers?
The FDC prefix designates this as an ultra-high interrupting capacity F-Frame breaker. It provides a 100kAIC rating at 480VAC, which is significantly higher than standard FD or HFD frame breakers, making it suitable for commercial and industrial systems with very high available fault currents.
What does the L at the end of the FDC2040L catalog number mean?
The L indicates that the breaker is supplied complete with factory-installed line and load lugs. These standard terminals accept 14 to 1/0 AWG copper or aluminum wire.
Is there a difference between the Cutler-Hammer and Eaton versions of the FDC2040L?
No. Eaton acquired Cutler-Hammer and integrated their product lines. An FDC2040L breaker branded as Cutler-Hammer is functionally identical to one branded as Eaton, and they share the same UL listings, accessories, and physical dimensions.
Can the thermal or magnetic trip settings be adjusted on this breaker?
No. This specific model features a fixed thermal and fixed magnetic trip unit. If your application requires adjustable trip settings, you will need to specify a breaker with an electronic trip unit.
What safety precautions are required when terminating aluminum wire to the lugs?
When using aluminum conductors, electricians must apply a suitable oxide-inhibiting joint compound to the stripped wire before inserting it into the lug. The lugs must then be torqued exactly to the manufacturer specifications printed on the breaker faceplate to prevent thermal expansion issues and potential arcing.
