Engineered for DC applications, the Eaton HKDDC3400 is a 3-pole, 400A MCCB. Its K-Frame design features PV Guard technology, ideal for solar photovoltaics and industrial networks. This unit mount breaker installs into Eaton Series C panelboards and switchboards. It includes standard lugs, accepting multiple wire gauges for flexible integration. Rated for 42 kAIC at 600VDC, it delivers dependable long-time and instantaneous (LI) protection against overloads.
What applications is the Eaton HKDDC3400 circuit breaker designed for?
The HKDDC3400 is a Series C K-frame breaker engineered for heavy-duty DC systems, including commercial photovoltaic (PV) solar arrays, data centers, and industrial facilities. It is compatible with Eaton Series C panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers.
Can the 3-pole HKDDC3400 be wired for 2-pole DC applications?
Yes. A 3-pole HKDDC breaker can be wired as a 2-pole device in grounded or ungrounded DC systems. The rated voltage and interruption capacity must be based on the number of poles wired in series according to the manufacturer guidelines.
What wire sizes are accepted by the lugs on the HKDDC3400?
The included lugs accept either one 3/0 AWG to 500 kcmil copper or aluminum conductor, or two 3/0 AWG to 250 kcmil copper or aluminum conductors per phase.
What type of trip unit is installed in the HKDDC3400?
This breaker features an interchangeable thermal-magnetic trip unit with fixed thermal (long-time) and adjustable magnetic (instantaneous) protection settings.
Is joint compound required when using aluminum conductors with this breaker?
Yes. When terminating aluminum conductors, applying a suitable joint compound is recommended to prevent terminal overheating. Overheating can cause nuisance tripping and permanent damage to the circuit breaker.
What is the difference between the HKDDC3400 and the HKDDC3400F?
The standard HKDDC3400 is a complete breaker that includes the frame, thermal-magnetic trip unit, and line and load lugs. The HKDDC3400F catalog number represents the frame only, requiring the trip unit and lugs to be sourced separately.
How does the interruption rating change for grounded isolated load configurations?
For grounded isolated load configurations, the interruption rating is based strictly on the number of poles in series that break the ungrounded leg of the DC power supply.
What is the recommended torque for the circuit breaker mounting screws?
When installing the breaker onto the mounting surface, the mounting screws should be tightened firmly but must not exceed 28 pound-inches (3 N.m).
