Built for heavy-duty commercial and industrial environments, the Eaton LM31000 provides robust 1000A protection in a 3-pole configuration. This Series C L-Frame breaker features a thermal-magnetic trip unit with fixed thermal and adjustable magnetic settings, ensuring precise defense against overloads and short circuits. Designed as an exact fit for legacy Westinghouse panelboards and switchboards, it eliminates the need for complex retrofits. For modern upgrades, it is replaced by the ND31000.
What equipment is the LM31000 breaker designed to fit?
It is engineered for installation in legacy Westinghouse panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers that accept LM frame breakers.
How does the adjustable magnetic trip function work on the LM31000?
The thermal-magnetic trip unit includes a fixed thermal element for standard overload protection and an adjustable magnetic element. This allows electricians to tune the instantaneous short-circuit pickup level to coordinate with other devices in the electrical system.
Is there a difference between the Eaton, Cutler-Hammer, and Westinghouse versions of the LM31000?
No. Eaton acquired the Westinghouse electrical distribution line and integrated it under the Cutler-Hammer and Eaton brands. The LM31000 catalog number refers to the exact same breaker across all three nameplates.
How is the LM31000 secured within the panelboard?
This is a bolt-on breaker, meaning the line side connections bolt directly to the panelboard or switchboard busbars for a secure, high-capacity electrical connection.
Does the LM31000 include load side lugs?
Yes, this breaker comes equipped with load side lugs for terminating outgoing conductors. The line side utilizes a bolt-on connection directly to the panel bus.
Can this breaker be installed in DC electrical systems?
Yes, the LM31000 is rated for DC applications up to 250VDC, providing a 10kA interrupting capacity for direct current circuits.
What does the LI trip unit designation indicate?
The LI code specifies that the breaker provides Long-Time and Instantaneous protection. The long-time function handles sustained overloads, while the instantaneous function clears high-level short circuits.
What safety precautions are required when adjusting the magnetic trip settings?
Adjustments to the magnetic trip settings should only be performed by a qualified electrician. The breaker must be de-energized, and the new settings must align with the facility coordination study to ensure proper fault clearing and system safety.
