Serving as a crucial maintenance component, the Square D SDT270 offers 70 amps of thermal-magnetic protection for older residential electrical systems. It is HACR rated, making it an excellent choice for heavy-duty air conditioning and heating circuits. This two-pole breaker is engineered specifically to fit into obsolete Square D Trilliant panelboards. It provides a safe, exact-fit replacement to extend the life of existing load centers. The unit includes a 10 kAIC rating and Visi-Trip window.
Which load centers are compatible with the SDT270?
The SDT270 is engineered exclusively for obsolete Square D Trilliant load centers. It features a unique plug-on design that will not fit in standard QO, Homeline, or other modern panelboards.
Can I substitute a QO or Homeline breaker for the SDT270?
No. Trilliant load centers require specific SDT series breakers. The bus bar connections in Trilliant panels are not compatible with QO or Homeline plug-on designs.
Is the SDT270 suitable for HVAC equipment circuits?
Yes. This breaker is HACR rated, meaning it is approved for use with heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment that requires a 70A, 2-pole overcurrent protection device.
How is the SDT270 installed into the panel?
The SDT270 features a plug-on connection designed specifically for the Noryl plastic interiors of Trilliant load centers. It snaps directly onto the bus bar without requiring mounting hardware.
How does the Visi-Trip feature work on this breaker?
The SDT270 includes a Visi-Trip window that displays a bright red indicator when the breaker trips due to an overload or short circuit. This allows for rapid identification of a faulted circuit in the panel.
Are tandem breakers available for Trilliant load centers?
No. Square D never manufactured tandem or piggyback breakers for the Trilliant series. You must use full-size SDT breakers, and the SDT270 will occupy two full spaces in the panel.
What type of protection does the LI trip function provide?
The LI designation indicates Long-Time and Instantaneous trip functions. The thermal (Long-Time) element protects against sustained overloads, while the magnetic (Instantaneous) element clears short circuits immediately.
Can the SDT270 be used on a 3-phase system?
No. This is a 1-phase, 2-pole breaker rated for 120/240VAC. It is designed strictly for single-phase residential or light commercial Trilliant load centers.
What does the 10kAIC rating mean for this breaker?
The 10kAIC interrupting rating indicates that the breaker can safely interrupt up to 10,000 amps of fault current at 240V without sustaining internal damage. This is the standard fault current rating for most residential Trilliant panels.
