Built for heavy-duty commercial applications, the HPB3B1600 is a 1600A molded case circuit breaker from Siemens and ITE. This bolt-on breaker installs into legacy Siemens switchboards and power panelboards. As a discontinued HP frame model, it serves as an exact fit replacement, eliminating the need for retrofitting. Rated at 65 kAIC at 240V, it delivers robust fault clearing. The unit includes an interchangeable trip unit and adjustable magnetic settings.
What equipment is the HPB3B1600 circuit breaker designed to fit?
This bolt-on breaker is designed for use in compatible Siemens and legacy ITE switchboards and power panelboards. Always verify your specific enclosure's labeling to ensure the HPB frame is an approved replacement.
Can I use this ITE breaker in a Siemens panelboard?
Yes. Siemens acquired ITE, and many legacy ITE molded case circuit breakers are approved for use in Siemens equipment. You must check your panelboard's compatibility matrix to confirm the HPB frame is listed as an acceptable device.
What is the purpose of the adjustable magnetic trip on the HPB3B1600?
The adjustable magnetic trip allows you to tune the instantaneous short-circuit response. This helps coordinate the breaker with downstream devices and prevents nuisance tripping from high inrush currents.
Is the HPB3B1600 rated for direct current applications?
Yes, in addition to its alternating current ratings, this breaker is rated for up to 250VDC with an interrupting capacity of 42kA.
How does the HPB3B1600 mount into the electrical enclosure?
It features a bolt-on mounting style, requiring bolted connections directly to the panelboard or switchboard busbars to ensure a secure connection for high-amperage loads.
Does this breaker require specific lugs for installation?
Yes, while configured for lug terminals, 1600A applications require specific multi-barrel lug kits to accommodate parallel conductor runs. You must select the appropriate Siemens lug kit based on your wire size and material (copper or aluminum).
What does the LI trip function code indicate on this breaker?
The LI designation means the thermal-magnetic trip unit provides Long-Time (L) overload protection and Instantaneous (I) short-circuit protection.
What safety procedures are required when installing this 1600A breaker?
Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician. The switchboard or panelboard must be completely de-energized, locked out, and tagged out before installation. Proper personal protective equipment is required when verifying the equipment is de-energized.
