A drop-in replacement for legacy Zinsco and Sylvania load centers, the QCAL60 restores reliable protection to aging infrastructure. This 60A, two-pole breaker is designed for residential and commercial applications. Featuring a plug-on mounting style, it installs into existing enclosures without aftermarket adapters. It is frequently cross-referenced with the Connecticut Electric UBIZ260. Rated for 10 kAIC at 120/240VAC, the 1.5-inch thick series design ensures proper busbar alignment.
This breaker is designed for direct installation into legacy Zinsco and Sylvania load centers that accept QC or QCAL type plug-on breakers.
What is the Connecticut Electric cross-reference for the QCAL60?
The Connecticut Electric UBIZ260 and UBIZ0260 are recognized aftermarket replacements for this 60-amp, 2-pole Zinsco breaker.
Does the QCAL60 require a mounting adapter for older panels?
No. It features the original plug-on mounting style, allowing it to snap directly into classic Zinsco and Sylvania enclosures without aftermarket modification kits.
How much panel space does the QCAL60 require?
As a thick series breaker, it requires two standard 3/4-inch spaces (1.5 inches total) on the panel busbar.
Are there safety concerns associated with legacy Zinsco panels?
Yes. Zinsco panels have a documented history of safety hazards, including breakers failing to trip during overloads and aluminum busbars corroding. Many industry professionals recommend replacing these aging panels with modern equipment.
Why do Zinsco breakers sometimes fail to disconnect power?
The clip connecting the breaker to the busbar can degrade over time, leading to arcing and extreme heat. This heat can weld the breaker directly to the busbar, allowing current to flow even when the handle is in the off position.
Can I use this breaker for generator backfeeding with an interlock kit?
No. Due to the known reliability issues and failure rates of legacy Zinsco breakers, safety organizations and interlock manufacturers strongly advise against using them for generator backfeeding.
How does the thermal-magnetic trip unit in this breaker operate?
The fixed LI (long-time and instantaneous) trip unit uses a bimetallic strip to respond to prolonged overloads and a magnetic mechanism to trip immediately during severe short circuits up to its 10kAIC rating.
