Product FAQs

9 answers
What enclosures and panels are compatible with the HDM36100?

This PowerPacT H-frame breaker is designed for installation in Square D switchboards, motor control centers, industrial control panels, and dedicated PowerPacT H-frame enclosures.

What is the difference between the HDM36100 and the HDL36100?

Both are 100A, 3-pole PowerPacT H-frame breakers with identical D-tier interrupting ratings. The difference is the termination style. The HDL36100 has lugs on both the line and load sides, while the HDM36100 is configured with lugs on the line side and terminal nuts on the load side.

Can the HDM36100 be installed in a Square D I-Line panelboard?

No, the HDM36100 is a unit-mount breaker and will not plug into an I-Line bussing system. For I-Line panelboards, you must use the I-Line equivalent, which is catalog number HDA36100.

What wire sizes are accepted by the line-side lugs on this breaker?

The factory-installed lugs accept 14 AWG to 3/0 AWG aluminum or copper conductors. Ensure proper torque specifications are followed during installation as outlined by Schneider Electric.

What does the 'D' in the HDM36100 catalog number signify?

In the Square D PowerPacT nomenclature, the 'D' indicates the breaker's interrupting rating tier. A D-tier breaker provides a 14kA rating at 600VAC, 18kA at 480VAC, and 25kA at 240VAC.

What type of protection does the LI trip function provide on this breaker?

The LI designation means the breaker uses a thermal-magnetic trip unit offering Long-Time (L) and Instantaneous (I) protection. The long-time thermal element protects against sustained overloads, while the instantaneous magnetic element clears short-circuit faults.

Are the trip settings adjustable on the HDM36100?

No, this model features fixed thermal and fixed magnetic trip elements. If your application requires adjustable trip curves or energy metering, you will need a PowerPacT breaker equipped with a Micrologic electronic trip unit.

Can the HDM36100 be used in DC electrical systems?

Yes, this breaker is rated for direct current applications up to 250VDC, providing a 20kA interrupting capacity. It is suitable for use in DC control panels and battery systems within its voltage limits.

How do the dual-break rotating contacts in the HDM36100 improve system protection?

The dual-break rotating contact mechanism reduces the peak let-through current during a short-circuit fault. This current-limiting effect clears faults rapidly, minimizing thermal and mechanical stress on downstream electrical equipment.
