Part of the PowerPacT series, the Square D GJL36020 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker designed for industrial applications. It delivers reliable overcurrent protection for critical infrastructure. Configured for unit mounting, this breaker installs into Square D control panels. As a legacy G-frame component, it is officially replaced by the HJL36020 for modern system upgrades. Rated at 65 kAIC at 480VAC, the unit features a current-limiting design to minimize fault damage.
What do the letters "GJL" indicate in the GJL36020 part number?
In Square D nomenclature, "G" specifies the PowerPacT G-Frame, "J" indicates the interrupting rating (65kA at 480V), and "L" denotes that the breaker is supplied with factory-installed line and load lugs.
What do the numbers "36020" signify in the GJL36020 catalog number?
The "3" indicates a 3-pole configuration, the "6" specifies a 600V AC maximum voltage rating, and the "020" denotes the 20-amp continuous current rating.
Can the Square D GJL36020 be reverse fed?
Yes, standard thermal-magnetic PowerPacT G-Frame circuit breakers like the GJL36020 do not have line or load restrictions and can be safely reverse fed.
What wire sizes are compatible with the GJL36020 lugs?
The factory-installed feed-thru lugs accept 14 to 1/0 AWG copper (Cu) wire, or 8 to 1/0 AWG aluminum (Al) wire.
Is the GJL36020 a drop-in replacement for legacy FAL or FHL breakers?
No. While the PowerPacT G-Frame covers similar amperage and voltage applications as the older Square D F-Frame breakers, they have different physical dimensions and mounting footprints. Upgrading from an FAL to a GJL requires verifying the available space and mounting hardware in your enclosure.
How does the GJL36020 mount inside a panel?
This is a unit-mount circuit breaker. It bolts directly to a backpan or mounting plate inside Square D control panels, switchboards, or standalone enclosures, rather than plugging onto a busbar.
Does the GJL36020 include ground fault protection?
No. This breaker features a standard thermal-magnetic trip unit with Long-Time and Instantaneous (LI) functions for overload and short-circuit protection. It does not provide ground fault or equipment protection.
Are the thermal and magnetic trip settings adjustable on the GJL36020?
No, the GJL36020 features a fixed thermal and fixed magnetic trip unit. If you require adjustable trip settings, you will need to look at breakers with electronic Micrologic trip units.
