This breaker is designed exclusively for use in Square D I-Line panelboards and switchboards. It features a plug-on phase connection on the line side and mechanical lugs on the load side.
Can I use a modern H-frame breaker to replace the legacy FGA34030?
While modern H-frame breakers (such as the HGA36030) serve as current-generation replacements, they require a 4.5-inch mounting space (1.5 inches per pole). The legacy FGA34030 uses a narrower 3-inch phase footprint (1 inch per pole). You must verify your I-Line panelboard has the physical space to accommodate the wider H-frame before upgrading.
How does the I-Line connection work on the FGA34030?
The I-Line design allows the breaker to plug directly into the panelboard bus assembly on the line side using spring-loaded jaws. This eliminates the need for line-side wiring and speeds up installation. The load side utilizes standard mechanical lugs for wire termination.
What type of trip unit is installed in the FGA34030?
This breaker features a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit. It provides long-time (thermal) overload protection and instantaneous (magnetic) short-circuit protection. The trip settings are factory-fixed and cannot be adjusted in the field.
Does the interrupting capacity change depending on the system voltage?
Yes. The FGA34030 provides a 35kAIC interrupting rating on 480V and 277V AC systems. When installed in a 240V AC system, the interrupting capacity increases to 65kAIC.
What wire sizes are accepted by the load lugs on the FGA34030?
The factory-installed load lugs accept copper or aluminum conductors ranging from 14 AWG to 4 AWG. Ensure proper torque specifications are followed during installation as outlined on the breaker faceplate.
