The QO250EPD is an Equipment Protection Device (EPD) that trips at a 30mA ground fault threshold. Standard Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFI) breakers trip at a much lower 5mA threshold to protect personnel. EPD breakers are designed to prevent equipment damage from low-level electrical leakage while avoiding nuisance tripping on machinery.
Can the QO250EPD be used for personnel ground fault protection?
No. This is a Class B Equipment Protection Device (EPD) with a 30mA trip threshold. It is designed strictly to protect equipment from damage. For personnel protection, a Class A GFCI breaker with a 5mA trip threshold is required by electrical code.
Why does the QO250EPD have a pigtail neutral if it is a 240V breaker?
The pigtail neutral wire must be connected to the panel neutral bus bar to power the internal ground fault monitoring circuitry. This connection is required for the 30mA equipment protection to function properly, even if your 240V load does not utilize a neutral wire.
Can I install the QO250EPD in a Square D Homeline or QOB panel?
No. The QO250EPD features a plug-on mounting design specifically for QO load centers, NQ panelboards, NQOD panelboards, and Speed-D switchboards. It will not fit in Homeline panels, which require HOM series breakers, or panels that require QOB bolt-on connections.
What is the difference between the QO250EPD and the QOB250EPD?
The QO250EPD is a plug-on breaker designed for QO load centers and NQ panelboards. The QOB250EPD has identical electrical specifications but features a bolt-on mounting design specifically for QOB compatible panelboards. They are not interchangeable.
What is the recommended tightening torque for the load terminals on the QO250EPD?
