Yes. Eaton acquired the distribution equipment divisions of both Westinghouse and Cutler-Hammer. The HFD3070 catalog number remains identical, making the current Eaton model a direct drop-in replacement for legacy Cutler-Hammer and Westinghouse HFD breakers.
What is the difference between an Eaton FD3070 and an HFD3070?
The primary difference is the interrupting capacity. A standard FD3070 is rated to safely clear a 35kA fault at 480VAC, whereas the HFD designation indicates a high-interrupting breaker rated for 65kA at 480VAC. Both breakers use the identical F-frame housing and mounting footprint.
Is the HFD3070 suitable for reverse-feed applications?
Yes, standard Series C thermal-magnetic F-frame breakers are suitable for reverse-feed installations. They can be safely wired with the incoming line voltage connected to either the upper or lower terminals.
What are the terminal torque specifications for the standard lugs on the HFD3070?
The standard slotted lugs (catalog number 3T100FB) require specific tightening torques based on the wire size used: 35 lb-in for 14-10 AWG, 40 lb-in for 8 AWG, 45 lb-in for 6-4 AWG, and 50 lb-in for 3 to 1/0 AWG conductors. Always verify torque values on the breaker's side label before energizing.
Can I field-install an internal accessory like a shunt trip or auxiliary switch in the HFD3070?
Under UL 489 guidelines, F-frame molded case circuit breakers are factory-sealed devices. Opening the breaker case to install internal accessories in the field will void the UL listing. These accessories must be ordered as factory-installed modifications directly from Eaton.
Is the 70-amp HFD3070 switching duty (SWD) rated?
No. While it can safely turn power on and off to its connected load, only 15A and 20A single-pole F-frame breakers carry an official SWD rating for use as standard fluorescent lighting switches.
