This Equipment Protection Device (EPD) features a 30mA ground fault trip threshold designed to protect machinery and equipment. Standard Class A GFCI breakers have a 4mA to 6mA threshold intended for personnel protection, which can cause nuisance tripping on certain heating or motor loads.
What are common applications for a 40A GFEP breaker?
A 30mA GFEP breaker is typically installed for heat tracing, snow melting equipment, or dedicated 240V machinery where standard 5mA GFCI protection would result in nuisance tripping but equipment protection is still required by code.
Can the HOM240EPD be installed in a Square D QO load center?
No. Homeline breakers feature a 1 inch per pole format and are strictly designed for Square D Homeline load centers. QO panels require breakers with a 3/4 inch per pole footprint.
How is the ground fault circuitry powered on this breaker?
The breaker includes a pigtail neutral wire that must be landed directly on the neutral bus bar of the load center. This connection is required for the internal ground fault sensing circuitry to operate correctly, even if the load does not use a neutral.
Is this pigtail breaker compatible with Plug-On Neutral (PON) Homeline panels?
Yes. While it does not utilize the plug-on neutral rail directly, pigtail breakers can still be installed in PON load centers by landing the pigtail wire on the standard neutral bus bar.
Does this 2-pole breaker require a load neutral connection?
If the 240V load does not utilize a neutral wire, the breaker will still function correctly. The pigtail neutral must be connected to the panel neutral bar to power the breaker electronics, but the load neutral terminal on the breaker can remain empty for straight 240V loads.

I needed a specific breaker that has a large opening for the wiring. The photos were deceiving and showed what looked like the large opening I need for where the wires go. However, I received the breaker and the opening is the exact same and 2 other breakers I purchased from Home Depot and from Menards. Now I spent another $35 on a breaker I can’t even use. Shopping is outrageously priced, and I tried to return and I literally will have to PAY THEM to return this item. I’m very upset.
