The JDL36250U31X comes standard with factory-installed AL250JD lugs on both the line and load sides. These dual-rated lugs accept either copper or aluminum wire ranging from 3/0 AWG to 350 kcmil, and proper torque values will be printed directly on the breaker face.
How does the Micrologic 3.2 trip unit differ from standard thermal-magnetic breakers?
Unlike traditional thermal-magnetic breakers, the solid-state Micrologic 3.2 trip unit allows you to precisely adjust both Long-Time and Instantaneous (LI) pickup settings via dials on the front panel. This enables superior overcurrent coordination for industrial control panels and switchboards.
Will this J-Frame circuit breaker plug into a Square D I-Line panelboard?
No. The JDL36250U31X is a unit-mount (feed-thru) circuit breaker designed to be bolted directly to a backpan in industrial enclosures or switchboards. It does not feature the plug-on jaw connections required for I-Line panelboards.
Can the JDL36250U31X serve as a replacement for an obsolete KA-frame breaker?
This PowerPacT J-Frame model is the modern upgrade for legacy 250A KA-frame circuit breakers like the KA36250. However, because the physical dimensions and mounting footprint differ from the older frame, retrofitting it into an existing enclosure will require backpan modifications or adapter kits.
Is this 250A breaker rated for 100% continuous current?
No, standard PowerPacT J-frame circuit breakers, including the JDL36250U31X, are rated for 80% continuous duty. For continuous loads operating for three hours or more, the maximum sustained current should not exceed 200 amps to comply with National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
Is the JDL36250U31X suitable for reverse-feed applications?
Yes. This PowerPacT J-Frame breaker features a factory-sealed Micrologic electronic trip unit that is listed and suitable for reverse connection. You can land your incoming supply power on either the top or bottom terminals without impacting the breaker's protection capabilities.
Can I use this three-pole circuit breaker on a single-phase system?
Yes, but with strict voltage limitations. Square D marks three-pole J-Frame Micrologic breakers with U31X trip units for single-phase applications only on 240VAC circuits. You can route the single-phase power through any two of the three poles, but it is not approved for single-phase use at 480V or 600V.
Can I swap the factory-installed trip unit for a different protection type in the field?
No. The Micrologic 3.2 trip unit on the 250A J-Frame is factory-sealed and non-interchangeable. If your application requires a different protection scheme, such as LSI or LSIG, you will need to specify and order a different circuit breaker catalog number entirely.
