This F-Frame breaker is designed exclusively for Square D I-Line panelboards and switchboards. It utilizes a plug-on jaw connection that mounts directly to the I-Line bus assembly.
Can I install this I-Line breaker in a standard Square D QO or Homeline load center?
No. I-Line breakers like the FA24040 are built for commercial and industrial I-Line panelboards. They will not fit into residential QO or Homeline load centers.
Is the FA24040 still in production, or is there a direct replacement?
The FA series is a legacy F-Frame product. Square D has superseded this line with the PowerPact H-Frame series, which serves as the modern upgrade for I-Line panelboard installations.
What wire size is accepted by the standard lugs on the FA24040?
The standard AL100FA lugs on this 40-amp breaker accept 14 AWG to 1/0 AWG copper wire, or 12 AWG to 1/0 AWG aluminum wire.
Can this 480V-rated breaker be used on a 240V or 208V system?
Yes. The 480V designation is a maximum voltage rating. The breaker will operate safely on 240V or 208V systems, and it provides a higher interrupting rating at those lower voltages.
How is the FA24040 secured to the panelboard?
After the I-Line jaws are pushed onto the bus bars, the breaker is secured by driving a mounting screw through the off end of the breaker into a pre-drilled round hole on the panelboard backpan.
Does this breaker provide ground fault or arc fault protection?
No. The FA24040 is a standard thermal-magnetic breaker that provides only long-time overload and instantaneous short-circuit protection. It does not include GFCI or AFCI circuitry.
