The FCL34020 is an obsolete F-Frame breaker. The direct modern equivalent is the PowerPact H-Frame HJL36020, which maintains the 20A rating, 3-pole configuration, and unit-mount design while upgrading to current PowerPact technology.
Will the FCL34020 plug onto an I-Line bus?
No. The FCL34020 is a unit-mount, feed-thru circuit breaker equipped with mechanical lugs on both the line and load sides. It must be bolted to a backpan in compatible Square D enclosures, switchboards, or motor control centers.
Can the FCL34020 be installed in a standard residential load center?
No. The FCL34020 is an industrial F-Frame molded case circuit breaker. It will not fit in residential QO or Homeline panels. It is strictly designed for commercial Square D enclosures, switchboards, and motor control centers.
What is the benefit of the current-limiting design on the FCL34020?
As a current-limiting breaker, it clears high-level fault currents extremely fast, reducing the peak let-through energy. This minimizes thermal and mechanical stress on downstream conductors and equipment during a short-circuit event.
How does the interrupting rating change if installed on a 240V system?
While the breaker provides a 65kA interrupting capacity at its maximum 480VAC rating, installing it on a 240VAC system increases its interrupting rating to 100kA.
What are the acceptable wire sizes for the FCL34020 terminals?
The standard mechanical lugs accept 14 to 1/0 AWG copper wire or 12 to 1/0 AWG aluminum wire. Ensure conductors are sized appropriately for the 20A continuous load rating and torqued to the specifications printed on the breaker faceplate.
Are the trip settings adjustable on the FCL34020?
No. This breaker features a thermal-magnetic trip unit with fixed thermal (overload) and fixed magnetic (instantaneous short-circuit) settings. If adjustable trip curves are required, you must upgrade to a breaker with an electronic trip unit.

Expedited Shipments
