Product FAQs
7 answers
What type of panelboard is required for the KC34175-1422?
This breaker requires a Square D I-Line panelboard or switchboard. It is not compatible with standard load centers or NQ and NF series panelboards unless they are specifically configured with an I-Line interior.
What does the -1422 catalog suffix indicate?
The -1422 suffix designates that this breaker includes factory-installed internal accessories. Specifically, it contains a 120V AC shunt trip and a 1A/1B auxiliary switch.
How does the integrated 120V shunt trip operate?
The shunt trip coil allows the breaker to be opened remotely. When a 120V AC signal is applied to the coil terminals, it mechanically trips the breaker. This is frequently used for emergency power-off (EPO) stations or automated safety shutdowns.
How is the 1A/1B auxiliary switch utilized?
The auxiliary switch provides remote monitoring of the breaker status. It includes one normally open (1A) and one normally closed (1B) contact, which change state when the breaker opens or closes. This is used to signal PLCs, indicator lights, or alarm panels.
How is the thermal-magnetic trip unit configured on this model?
The KC34175-1422 features a fixed thermal element for long-time overload protection and an adjustable magnetic element for instantaneous short-circuit protection. The magnetic trip threshold can be dialed in on the face of the breaker to coordinate with downstream loads.
What is the modern replacement for this legacy K-frame breaker?
The KC series is a legacy K-frame breaker. For modern installations or replacements, Square D recommends the PowerPact J-frame series equipped with I-Line mounting brackets and equivalent shunt trip and auxiliary switch accessories.
How are the line and load connections made on this breaker?
Because this is an I-Line breaker, the line side connects directly to the panel busbar via plug-on jaws. The load side features mechanical lugs that accept aluminum or copper wire ranging from 4 AWG to 350 kcmil.
