Engineered for commercial power systems, the Square D LCP36600 is a 600A, 3-pole molded case circuit breaker. Designed for bolt-on mounting, this L-Frame breaker fits Square D switchboards and enclosures. It serves as a direct substitute for LCL36600 and LLL36600 breakers. Note that replacing this unit with the modern LJL36600 requires a specific retrofit kit. Delivering a 65kA interrupting rating at 480VAC, it includes load side lugs accepting (2) 2/0 AWG to 500 kcmil wire.
Is the LCP36600 still manufactured, or is there a modern replacement?
The LCP36600 is a legacy L-Frame breaker. For modern replacements, Square D transitioned to the PowerPact L-frame series. Exact cross-referencing to a PowerPact model depends on your specific panel, mounting, and trip unit requirements.
Can I install the LCP36600 in a Square D I-Line panelboard?
No. The LCP36600 features a bolt-on connection designed for unit-mount applications in switchboards, motor control centers, and enclosures. For an I-Line panelboard, you must use the plug-on equivalent, such as the LC36600.
How is the trip unit adjusted on the LCP36600?
The thermal protection (Long-Time) is fixed at 600 amps. The magnetic protection (Instantaneous) features an adjustable dial on the face of the breaker, allowing electricians to fine-tune the short-circuit trip threshold to coordinate with other devices in the electrical system.
Can I wire this 600A breaker using a single conductor per phase?
No. Standard wire sizes like 500 kcmil max out around 380 amps at 75C. To safely carry the full 600A load, you must use parallel conductors. The standard lugs on the LCP36600 accommodate two conductors per phase, ranging from 2/0 AWG to 500 kcmil (Al/Cu).
Why is it important to use a calibrated torque wrench when installing this breaker?
Under-torquing can lead to high-resistance connections, overheating, and potential fire hazards, while over-torquing can damage the conductor strands or lug body. NEC 110.14(D) requires the use of a calibrated torque tool to ensure connections meet the manufacturer's exact specifications printed on the breaker label.
Can the LCP36600 be reverse fed?
Standard thermal-magnetic L-frame breakers without Line and Load markings are generally suitable for reverse feeding. However, always check the physical breaker faceplate. If it is explicitly marked Line and Load, it must be wired in that specific direction to comply with NEC 240.81.
How should the LCP36600 be wired for 250VDC applications?
When using this breaker in a 250VDC system, it typically requires wiring multiple poles in series to safely interrupt the DC arc. Always consult the Square D wiring diagrams and NEC guidelines for proper multi-pole DC configurations.
