Designed for demanding industrial environments, the Square D MAL26500 is a 500A, 2-pole molded case circuit breaker. It utilizes a thermal-magnetic trip mechanism with fixed thermal and adjustable magnetic settings. This lug-in, lug-out unit-mount breaker fastens into Square D switchboards and motor control centers. For modern replacements, the PowerPact MGA36500 can be used by wiring the two outer poles. No, this is a unit-mount, feed-thru circuit breaker. It is designed to be hard-mounted in Square D switchboards and motor control centers, not in plug-on I-Line distribution panels.
What is the modern replacement for the legacy MAL26500?
The legacy M-frame has been superseded by the PowerPact series. For a modern equivalent, a 3-pole PowerPact MGA36500 can often be utilized by wiring the two outer poles, depending on your specific switchboard or enclosure clearances.
How are the conductors terminated on this breaker?
The breaker features factory-installed mechanical line and load lugs. Each lug can accommodate up to three 3/0 AWG to 500 kcmil aluminum or copper wires.
Are the trip settings adjustable on this model?
The thermal element for long-time protection is fixed, but the magnetic instantaneous trip function is adjustable. This allows you to coordinate the breaker with downstream loads and prevent nuisance tripping.
Is this breaker suitable for DC power applications?
Yes, it is rated for use in DC systems up to 250VDC. When applied in a 250VDC system, it provides a 14kA interrupting rating.
