Part of Square D's legacy F-Frame series, the FIL36070 is a 3-pole, 70A current limiting molded case circuit breaker built for commercial and industrial applications. It installs into Square D switchboards, motor control centers, and individual enclosures. Featuring thermal-magnetic trip technology with long-time and instantaneous functions, it delivers an impressive 200 kAIC interrupting rating at 480VAC. This unit is a direct replacement for older installations and is replaced by the HRL36070.

Product FAQs

Is the Square D FIL36070 still in active production?
The FIL36070 is part of the legacy F-Frame series. Schneider Electric designates the PowerPact B-Frame series as the modern replacement for F-Frame applications, though retrofitting may require specific mounting hardware depending on the existing enclosure.
What types of panels accept the FIL36070?
This unit-mount breaker is designed for installation in compatible Square D switchboards, motor control centers, and individual enclosures. It is not compatible with I-Line panelboards, which require a specialized plug-on mounting configuration.
What does the current limiting designation mean for this breaker?
As a current limiting breaker, it is engineered to clear high-level fault currents extremely fast, typically within a half-cycle. This reduces the peak let-through current and thermal energy, providing enhanced protection for downstream equipment.
What wire sizes are compatible with the factory lugs?
The factory-installed lugs accept wire gauges from 14 AWG up to 1/0 AWG. The terminals are rated for use with either copper or aluminum conductors. Ensure proper torque specifications are followed during installation to prevent terminal overheating.
How does the interrupting rating change based on the system voltage?
The breaker provides a maximum interrupting capacity of 200kA at 240V and 480V AC. When applied to 600V systems, the interrupting rating decreases to 100kA. Electricians must verify the available fault current at the installation point does not exceed these voltage-specific limits.
Can the thermal or magnetic trip settings be adjusted in the field?
No. The FIL36070 features a fixed thermal and fixed magnetic trip unit. The Long-Time and Instantaneous protection parameters are factory-set and cannot be modified, making it suitable for standard applications that do not require custom coordination.
Can the FIL36070 be used in reverse-feed applications?
No. These circuit breakers are labeled with specific Line and Load markings and are not suitable for reverse connections. Wiring must follow the designated directional flow to ensure proper operation and safety.
How does the thermal-magnetic trip mechanism protect electrical circuits?
The thermal component responds to prolonged overloads by heating a bimetallic strip, while the magnetic component reacts immediately to short circuits. Together, they ensure comprehensive protection against both gradual overheating and sudden fault conditions.
