This F-Frame breaker is designed for use within Eaton Series C panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers. It bolts directly onto the panel bus for reliable branch circuit protection.
Can the Eaton EHD3040 replace an older Westinghouse EHD3040?
Yes. Eaton acquired the Cutler-Hammer and Westinghouse circuit breaker lines. The current Eaton EHD3040 is a direct, drop-in replacement for legacy Westinghouse and Cutler-Hammer breakers bearing the same EHD3040 catalog number.
Are the physical dimensions the same across all Series C F-Frame breakers?
Yes. Eaton Series C F-Frame breakers, which include the EHD, FDB, FD, HFD, and FDC types, share the exact same physical footprint for equivalent pole configurations. A 3-pole EHD3040 will fit the exact same panel mounting space as a 3-pole FD3040 or HFD3040.
What does the LI designation mean for this trip unit?
The LI code indicates a thermal magnetic trip unit providing Long-Time (thermal overload) and Instantaneous (magnetic short-circuit) protection. On the EHD3040, both trip thresholds are fixed at the factory and the internal trip unit is non-interchangeable.
Is the EHD3040 suitable for reverse feed installations?
Yes. Eaton designates all Series C F-Frame molded case circuit breakers as suitable for reverse feed use, allowing line power to be connected to either the top or bottom terminals.
Can this breaker be used for HVAC or lighting circuits?
Yes. All Eaton F-Frame breakers are HACR rated for use with heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. Additionally, F-Frame models rated from 10 to 50 amps, including the 40A EHD3040, are HID rated for high-intensity discharge lighting loads.
What size wire is accepted by the standard terminal lugs?
The standard load side pressure lugs provided on this 40A breaker are designed to accept either copper or aluminum conductors ranging from 14 AWG up to 1/0 AWG.
Can I upgrade to an FD3040 if I need a higher interrupting capacity?
Yes. The FD3040 is an exact physical match to the EHD3040 but offers higher AIC ratings. If your system requires greater fault current handling, an FD or HFD frame can be installed in the same physical panel space.

Expedited Shipments
