Product FAQs

Can the Eaton HFD2225 replace an older Cutler-Hammer or Westinghouse HFD2225?
Yes. Eaton acquired the Westinghouse distribution equipment division and continued manufacturing the Series C line under the Cutler-Hammer and Eaton brands. An Eaton HFD2225 is physically and electrically interchangeable with older Cutler-Hammer and Westinghouse breakers sharing the same catalog number.
What is the difference between the Eaton FD2225 and the HFD2225?
Both are 225-amp, 2-pole Series C F-frame circuit breakers with identical physical dimensions. The difference is their interrupting capacity. The standard FD2225 is rated for 35 kAIC at 480VAC, while the HFD2225 is a high-interrupting breaker rated for 65 kAIC at 480VAC.
What is the recommended tightening torque for the standard lugs on the HFD2225?
The standard TA225FD1 aluminum lugs on this breaker require a tightening torque of 120 lb-in (13.6 N.m) for the wire binding screws. Always use a calibrated torque wrench to prevent terminal overheating or nuisance tripping.
Is the HFD2225 circuit breaker suitable for reverse feed applications?
Yes. Eaton Series C thermal magnetic F-frame circuit breakers do not have line and load restrictions, making them suitable for reverse feed wiring in control panels and switchboards.
What types of enclosures and equipment are compatible with the HFD2225?
This F-frame breaker is designed for use in Eaton Series C panelboards, switchboards, motor control centers, and individual industrial enclosures that accept bolt-on F-frame breakers.
Can the HFD2225 be used in DC voltage systems?
Yes, this thermal magnetic breaker is rated for up to 250VDC with a maximum interrupting capacity of 22 kAIC. Electronic trip F-frame breakers do not carry this DC rating, making the thermal magnetic HFD2225 the correct choice for these applications.
Does the HFD2225 require a specific wire material?
The standard TA225FD1 lugs installed on this breaker are dual-rated for both copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) conductors ranging from 4 AWG to 4/0 AWG. When using aluminum wire, applying a suitable joint compound is recommended to prevent oxidation.
What does the "LI" trip function mean on the HFD2225?
The "LI" designation indicates that the thermal magnetic trip unit provides Long-Time (L) protection for overloads and Instantaneous (I) protection for short circuits. Both the thermal and magnetic trip points are fixed on this specific model and cannot be adjusted in the field.
