Product FAQs
6 answers
Can I install the NA3P20 in a modern panelboard?
No. The NA3P20 features a proprietary plug-on design that only fits legacy Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok enclosures. It is not physically or electrically compatible with modern panels from brands like Square D, Eaton, or Siemens.
What is the difference between Federal Pacific NA and NC breakers?
NA series breakers are standard-width, taking up one full inch of space per pole. NC series breakers are a thin, half-inch per pole design. Because the NA3P20 is an NA series breaker, it requires three full one-inch spaces in a Stab-Lok panel.
Are there safety concerns associated with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers?
Yes. Legacy Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and breakers have a well-documented history of failing to trip under overload or short-circuit conditions, presenting a significant fire hazard. Many licensed electricians and inspectors strongly recommend a complete panel upgrade rather than replacing individual breakers.
Are there modern replacements for Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers?
Yes. Connecticut Electric produces new, UL-classified replacement breakers engineered to fit legacy FPE Stab-Lok panels. These aftermarket breakers are built to modern safety standards and provide a safer alternative if a full panel upgrade is not immediately feasible.
How do I identify if my panel accepts Stab-Lok breakers?
Stab-Lok panels typically have a label reading Federal Pacific Electric, FPE, or Federal Pioneer. The bus bars have a distinct slotted design that accepts the proprietary stab-style connection of NA and NC series breakers.
Is there a bolt-on equivalent to the NA3P20?
Yes. While the NA series features a plug-on connection, Federal Pacific manufactured a bolt-on equivalent under the NB series for use in compatible commercial panelboards.
