Built to accommodate existing electrical frameworks, the NA3P40 delivers 40 amps of continuous current capacity. This three-pole unit is tailored for facilities operating on vintage Federal Pacific distribution equipment. Integration is seamless thanks to the authentic Stab-Lok mounting style. It acts as a drop-in replacement for older panels and crosses over with the UBIF340N, eliminating aftermarket adapter kits.
What type of electrical panel is the Federal Pacific NA3P40 designed for?
The NA3P40 is a plug-on miniature circuit breaker designed exclusively for 3-phase Federal Pacific Stab-Lok load centers. It requires three spaces and will not fit single-phase panels or load centers from other manufacturers.
Are there safety concerns associated with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers?
Yes. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and breakers have documented safety and reliability issues, including a higher rate of failing to trip under overcurrent conditions. Many licensed electricians recommend full panel replacement when possible. The NA3P40 is typically sourced to maintain temporary functionality until a system upgrade can be completed.
Are there modern aftermarket replacements available for the NA3P40?
Yes. Because original Federal Pacific Electric breakers are obsolete, companies like Connecticut Electric manufacture new, aftermarket UBI replacement breakers designed to fit legacy Stab-Lok panels.
What wire sizes are compatible with the lugs on the NA3P40?
The terminal lugs on this breaker accept wire gauges ranging from 14 AWG to 2 AWG. Always verify the appropriate wire size based on the 40-amp circuit requirement and local electrical codes.
What does the LI trip function indicate on this breaker?
The LI designation means this thermal-magnetic breaker includes both Long-Time and Instantaneous trip functions. The long-time function protects against sustained overloads, while the instantaneous function provides immediate tripping during severe short circuits.
Can I use the NA3P40 in a panel that requires bolt-on breakers?
No. The NA3P40 features a plug-on connection designed for standard Stab-Lok load centers. If your panel requires a bolt-on connection, you will need the NB equivalent, such as the NB3P40.
