Siemens CFD63B175 Molded Case Circuit Breaker

All three are 175A, 3-pole Siemens FD-frame breakers with identical physical dimensions and mounting requirements. The primary difference is their short-circuit interrupting capacity. The FD63B175 is standard-rated, the HFD63B175 is high-interrupting, and the CFD63B175 is a fuseless current-limiting breaker with an ultra-high 200kA at 480VAC rating.

In Siemens SENTRON nomenclature, the "C" indicates that the breaker is a fuseless current-limiting device. This specialized design forces contacts apart during a major short circuit to quickly restrict peak fault current, offering the highest interrupting rating (up to 200kA at 480VAC) available in the FD frame family.

The CFD63B175 mounts natively in Siemens Sentron Series panelboards (including P1, P2, and P3 models), Siemens switchboards, Motor Control Centers, and properly sized standalone enclosures. Because it uses the standard FD frame footprint, it fits wherever standard FD6 or HFD6 breakers are accepted, provided the correct strap kits or mounting hardware are utilized.

This breaker features a thermal-magnetic trip unit with fixed thermal and adjustable magnetic settings. The thermal overload protection is permanently fixed at 175 amps. However, the instantaneous magnetic trip can be adjusted in the field via a dial on the front of the breaker, allowing installers to fine-tune short-circuit pickup levels for proper coordination with motor inrush currents and downstream electrical devices.

Current-limiting breakers like the CFD63B175 are critical for safety in systems with extremely high available fault currents. By interrupting a short circuit rapidly, the breaker drastically reduces the let-through energy (I2t) to a value less than that of a one-half cycle wave. This protects downstream panels, breakers, and sensitive components from catastrophic thermal and mechanical stress.
