A drop-in solution for legacy systems, the Square D EH24040 is a 2-pole, 40-amp plug-on molded case circuit breaker. It installs into older NEHB panelboards, which uniquely support both plug-on and bolt-on connections. If a plug-on unit is not required, the EHB24040 bolt-on breaker acts as a direct substitute. Rated for 14kAIC at 480Y/277VAC, it utilizes thermal-magnetic trip technology and features the signature Visi-Trip indicator to simplify troubleshooting and maintenance.
What panelboards are compatible with the EH24040 circuit breaker?
The EH24040 is designed exclusively for use in legacy Square D NEHB panelboards. It will not fit in modern NF or NQ panelboards.
Can I use an EDB circuit breaker to replace the EH24040?
No. While the EDB series replaced the EH and EHB series, EDB breakers are designed for modern NF panelboards and will not physically fit or connect to an NEHB panelboard bus.
Can I install the EH24040 in a Square D I-Line panelboard?
No, the EH24040 is an E-Frame breaker designed specifically for NEHB panelboards. I-Line panelboards require breakers with specialized plug-on brackets, such as the FA, LA, or PowerPact series.
How does the EH24040 connect to the panelboard bus?
The EH24040 features a plug-on connection type. If your NEHB panelboard requires a bolt-on connection, you will need the equivalent EHB series breaker, such as the EHB24040.
Do I need to purchase separate lugs for the EH24040?
No, the EH24040 comes with factory-installed mechanical lugs ready to accept 14 to 2 AWG copper or 12 to 2 AWG aluminum wire.
What does the 480Y/277VAC voltage rating indicate for system compatibility?
The 480Y/277VAC rating means this breaker is intended for use on solidly grounded wye electrical systems. It is not rated for use on 480V ungrounded delta or corner-grounded delta systems.
Are the trip settings on the EH24040 adjustable?
No, the EH24040 features a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit with factory-set long-time and instantaneous functions. The trip curve cannot be field-adjusted.
Is the Square D EH24040 still actively manufactured?
No, the EH and EHB series breakers, along with their corresponding NEHB panelboards, are legacy products and have been discontinued by Schneider Electric.
What is the bolt-on equivalent to the EH24040?
The EHB24040 is the exact bolt-on equivalent for NEHB panelboards that require mechanical bolt-on connections rather than plug-on.
Does the EH24040 include Visi-Trip technology?
Yes, Square D EH series breakers feature a Visi-Trip indicator, which provides a highly visible red flag to help quickly identify a tripped breaker in the panel.
