Built to accommodate older switchgear, this legacy F-Frame MCCB utilizes Visi-Trip technology for rapid fault identification. Designed specifically for Square D I-Line panelboards requiring a narrow 3-inch mounting footprint. It provides 65kAIC protection at 240VAC and 35kAIC at 480Y/277VAC via fixed thermal-magnetic LI functions. Maintaining the original FGA form factor is crucial for older setups, as the modern HGA36020 replacement requires an expanded 4.5-inch space within the enclosure.
Can I install the FGA34020 in a standard QO or Homeline load center?
No. The FGA34020 features an I-Line plug-in mounting style and is exclusively compatible with Square D I-Line panelboards and switchboards. It will not fit in standard residential QO or Homeline load centers.
What is the modern PowerPact replacement for the legacy FGA34020?
The FGA34020 is part of the legacy F-frame series. Its modern equivalent in the Square D lineup is the PowerPact H-frame HGA36020, which provides the same 20A rating, 3-pole configuration, and I-Line mounting.
How does the I-Line connection work on the FGA34020?
The breaker features plug-on jaws on the line side that snap directly onto the busbar stack of an I-Line panelboard. The load side utilizes traditional mechanical lugs that accept 14-4 AWG copper or aluminum wire.
Does the FGA34020 support 600V applications?
No. While some Square D breakers are rated up to 600VAC, the FGA34020 has a maximum voltage rating of 480VAC. If your system requires 600V protection, you will need to source a different breaker, such as the modern HGA36020 which carries a 600V rating.
Why does the FGA34020 have two different interrupting ratings?
The interrupting capacity (AIC) depends on the system voltage. This breaker is rated to safely interrupt up to 65kA at 240VAC, but the rating drops to 35kA when used in 480VAC or 277VAC systems.
Are the thermal and magnetic trip settings adjustable on this breaker?
No. The FGA34020 features a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit. Both the long-time (thermal overload) and instantaneous (magnetic short-circuit) trip thresholds are factory-set and cannot be adjusted in the field.
