8 answersWhat is the difference between the Square D FA36020 and the FH36020?
Both are 20A, 3-pole F-frame I-Line circuit breakers, but they differ in their Ampere Interrupting Capacity (AIC). The FH36020 is the high-interrupting version, offering 65kA at 240VAC and 25kA at 480VAC. The FA36020 is standard-interrupting, with lower ratings of 25kA at 240VAC and 18kA at 480VAC. The FH36020 can be used as a direct upgrade for an FA36020.
Is the FH36020 still an active production model?
No. The Square D F-frame molded case circuit breaker line is a legacy series and has been obsolete for several years. The direct modern replacement is the PowerPacT H-frame (such as the HGA36020 or HJA36020), which drops directly into the exact same I-Line busbar space.
Can I install this circuit breaker in a standard QO or Homeline panel?
No. The FH36020 features specialized I-Line plug-on jaws and is exclusively designed for use in Square D I-Line commercial panelboards and switchboards. It is physically incompatible with QO, Homeline, NQ, or NF load centers.
Will the FH36020 work in a standalone enclosure or unit-mount setup?
No. This breaker is specifically manufactured for I-Line busbar mounting and lacks line-side lugs. For a unit-mount (lug-to-lug) application where you need to attach wires to both sides of the breaker, you must use the FHL36020 or its modern PowerPacT equivalent.
How is the FH36020 physically secured inside an I-Line panelboard?
The line-side plug-on jaws are pressed directly onto the panelboard bus stack. To finalize the installation, a mounting foot on the opposite end (load side) of the circuit breaker is bolted into the panel's internal mounting pan, providing a secure and rigid connection.
What is the recommended termination torque for the load-side lugs?
The factory-standard AL50FA mechanical load lugs typically require a tightening torque of 35 lb-in for 14 to 4 AWG stranded copper or aluminum conductors. Always check the factory label on the side of the breaker to ensure strict compliance with NEC 110.14(D) before energizing.
Are the overcurrent trip thresholds on this breaker adjustable?
No. The FH36020 features a standard fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit. It provides Long-Time (thermal) and Instantaneous (magnetic) protection, but neither of these trip curves can be field-adjusted by the installer.
Can the FH36020 be used in industrial DC power circuits?
Yes. Alongside its standard alternating current ratings, this breaker is UL listed for direct current applications up to 250VDC. It carries a 10kA interrupting rating at 250VDC.
