Built for heavy-duty commercial environments, the Square D FHL26020 is a 20A, 2-pole molded case circuit breaker. It utilizes a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit to deliver reliable long-time and instantaneous (LI) protection across 600VAC systems. This F-Frame breaker mounts into Square D enclosures, switchboards, and motor control centers. For modernization projects, it is replaced by the HGL26020, which requires a specific retrofit kit for proper installation. It features a 65kAIC rating.
Is the Square D FHL26020 an obsolete circuit breaker?
The FHL26020 belongs to the legacy F-Frame series, which Schneider Electric has largely transitioned to the newer PowerPact B-Frame and H-Frame lines. However, F-Frame breakers remain widely used for maintaining existing electrical distribution equipment without requiring a complete panel retrofit.
How does the FHL series differ from the FAL series?
Both are Square D F-Frame breakers, but the FHL series features a higher interrupting capacity. While a standard FAL breaker typically offers 18 kA at 480V AC, the FHL26020 provides 25 kA at 480V AC, making it suitable for systems with higher available fault currents.
Will the FHL26020 fit in a Square D I-Line panelboard?
No. The FHL26020 is a unit-mount, feed-thru breaker equipped with lugs on both the line and load sides. It is designed to be mounted to a backpan in industrial control panels or enclosures, not in I-Line distribution panels which require a specific plug-on bracket.
What wire sizes are compatible with the AL50FA lugs on the FHL26020?
The factory-installed AL50FA line and load lugs accept 14 to 1/0 AWG copper conductors and 12 to 1/0 AWG aluminum conductors. Ensure all terminations are torqued to the specifications printed directly on the breaker label.
Can the FHL26020 be reverse fed?
Standard thermal magnetic F-Frame breakers without specific Line and Load markings can typically be reverse fed. If the breaker label explicitly designates line and load terminals, it must be wired in the standard top-fed configuration.
Can the FHL26020 be used in DC power systems?
Yes, this breaker is rated for use in DC applications up to 250V DC, providing a 10 kA interrupting rating. This allows it to be deployed in specialized industrial control panels and DC distribution equipment.
Are the trip settings adjustable on the FHL26020?
No, this breaker features a fixed thermal magnetic trip unit. Both the long time thermal and instantaneous magnetic trip functions are factory set and cannot be adjusted in the field.
