Product FAQs
7 answers
What does the "L" in the HLL36090 part number indicate?
In the Square D PowerPacT nomenclature, the second letter "L" designates the interrupting rating tier. The L-tier provides very high interrupting capacity, rated up to 125kA at 240VAC and 100kA at 480VAC.
Is the HLL36090 compatible with I-Line panelboards?
No. The third letter "L" in HLL36090 indicates it is a unit-mount breaker equipped with lugs on both the line and load sides. For an I-Line panelboard, you require the I-Line equivalent, which is the HLA36090.
Can the PowerPacT HLL36090 replace older Square D breakers?
Yes, the PowerPacT H-frame series was introduced to replace legacy Square D F-frame circuit breakers, such as the FAL or FHL models. Depending on your existing enclosure, you may need specific mounting hardware or adapter plates to complete the retrofit.
How does the adjustable magnetic trip work on this breaker?
While the thermal protection (long-time) is fixed at 90 amps, the magnetic (instantaneous) trip threshold can be adjusted using the dial on the front of the breaker. This allows electricians to fine-tune the short-circuit response to coordinate with downstream devices or motor inrush currents.
What type of wire can be used with the factory lugs?
The factory-installed lugs accept either copper or aluminum conductors ranging from 14 AWG to 3/0 AWG. Ensure you apply the correct torque as specified on the breaker faceplate to prevent thermal issues at the terminations.
Can this circuit breaker be reverse fed?
Standard PowerPacT H-frame thermal-magnetic circuit breakers without specialized communication modules or ground fault features are typically suitable for reverse feeding. Always verify the faceplate for any "Line" and "Load" markings before backfeeding the breaker.
How is the HLL36090 mounted?
This is a unit-mount circuit breaker, meaning it is designed to be bolted directly to a backpan or mounting plate in control panels, switchboards, or industrial enclosures. It does not plug into a busway.
