Built for heavy-duty applications, the Square D MGL36500 is a 3-pole, 500A molded case circuit breaker in the PowerPacT M-Frame series. It provides dependable protection for commercial facilities. Designed for unit mounting, it integrates into Square D switchboards and motor control centers. The included lugs accommodate 3/0 AWG to 500 kcmil conductors. With a 65kAIC rating at 240VAC, it features an ET 1.0 electronic trip unit offering long-time and instantaneous (LI) protection.
What is the difference between the Square D MGL36500 and the MGA36500?
The MGL36500 is a unit-mount circuit breaker that installs with standard mechanical lugs. The MGA36500 is an I-Line breaker designed specifically to plug directly onto an I-Line bus. Both share the same 500A PowerPacT M-frame chassis and electrical ratings.
Can the PowerPacT MGL36500 replace older Square D MA or MH frame breakers?
Yes, the PowerPacT M-frame series is the direct replacement generation for legacy Square D MA and MH circuit breakers. The MGL36500 offers equivalent capacity but features a more compact footprint and an upgraded solid-state trip unit.
Is the trip unit on the MGL36500 adjustable?
Yes. The included electronic trip unit features fixed long-time protection for overloads and an adjustable instantaneous pickup for short-circuit protection. This solid-state design provides highly repeatable trip curves compared to older thermal-magnetic mechanisms.
What types of equipment can the MGL36500 be installed in?
As a unit-mount, feed-thru breaker, it is designed for installation in Square D switchboards, motor control centers, and individual industrial enclosures. It mounts directly to a backpan or mounting plate rather than plugging into a panelboard bus.
What does the "G" in the MGL36500 part number indicate?
The "G" designates the interrupting capacity level of the breaker within the PowerPacT series. For this model, the G-rating provides a maximum interrupting rating of 65kA at 240VAC, 35kA at 480VAC, and 18kA at 600VAC.
Is the MGL36500 rated for 100% continuous operation?
No, this standard PowerPacT M-frame breaker carries a standard 80% continuous current rating. Per standard electrical codes, continuous loads operating for three hours or longer should not exceed 400A (80% of the 500A nominal rating).
Are terminal lugs included with this breaker?
Yes, the MGL36500 comes standard with mechanical lugs factory-installed on both the line and load sides. The lugs accept up to three aluminum or copper conductors per phase, ranging from 3/0 AWG to 500 kcmil.
How can I manually verify the mechanical operation of the breaker?
The MGL36500 features an integral push-to-trip button located on the front cover. This allows you to manually trip the circuit breaker to ensure the mechanical linkage is operating correctly before or during routine maintenance.
