Product FAQs
6 answers
What is the difference between the BQ240250 and a BQC240250 breaker?
The Type BQ series features an independent trip mechanism, meaning each of the four poles trips individually during an overcurrent event. Type BQC breakers feature a common trip mechanism where paired poles are internally linked to trip simultaneously, which is typically required for 240V loads.
Does the BQ240250 require a notched bus bar for installation?
Yes. This is a Circuit Total Limitation (CTL) breaker equipped with a rejection tab on the bus connection side. It can only be installed in load center positions that have notched bus stabs specifically designed to accept tandem or quadplex breakers.
Can I install this breaker in a Square D or Siemens load center?
No. The BQ240250 is exclusively designed for Eaton BR, legacy Bryant, Westinghouse, and Challenger load centers. It is not physically compatible or UL listed for use in Square D, Siemens, or GE panels.
Are the 40A and 50A circuits located on the inner or outer poles?
This quadplex breaker is configured with the two 40A circuits on the outside poles and the two 50A circuits on the center poles.
Is this a direct replacement for older Cutler-Hammer BQ240250 breakers?
Yes. Eaton acquired Cutler-Hammer and continues to manufacture the Type BQ series to the original specifications. This breaker serves as an exact, UL listed replacement for legacy Cutler-Hammer models bearing the same catalog number.
Is the independent trip BQ240250 suitable for multiwire branch circuits?
Yes. The independent trip design is often utilized for multiwire branch circuits (MWBC) sharing a neutral. Note that the NEC requires identified handle ties to provide a common disconnect for the ungrounded conductors, even if a common trip is not required.
