Built for residential safety, the CH120CAFA provides combination arc fault detection for 20-amp circuits. This single-pole breaker actively monitors for arcing to prevent electrical fires. It is designed for Eaton Type CH panelboards, utilizing a plug-on mounting style and a pigtail neutral. With a 10 kAIC capacity at 120/240V, the unit meets UL 1699 requirements. It fits existing CH panels and can be replaced by the CHFN120AF. This model is both HACR and SWD rated for lighting and HVAC.
What load centers are compatible with the CH120CAFA?
It is designed exclusively for Eaton and Cutler-Hammer Type CH load centers. It requires a 3/4-inch space on the bus bar.
How does the pigtail neutral on the CH120CAFA connect?
The coiled white pigtail wire must be connected directly to the neutral bus bar in the panel. This connection powers the internal electronics required for arc fault detection.
What does the diagnostic LED on the CH120CAFA indicate?
The red LED flashes a specific number of times to indicate the cause of the last trip, such as a series arc, parallel arc, or overvoltage. This helps troubleshoot the circuit after a fault.
Why is the red LED on my CH120CAFA staying solidly lit?
Eaton has stated that a constantly illuminated red LED is a cosmetic firmware variation. It does not indicate a safety hazard and does not affect the breaker's ability to protect against arc faults.
Does the CH120CAFA replace older Eaton AFCI breakers?
Yes, the CH120CAFA is the direct replacement for the older CH120CAF model. It provides updated combination arc fault protection for 20-amp circuits.
What is the difference between a standard breaker and this Combination AFCI?
While a standard breaker only trips during overloads or short circuits, a Combination AFCI like the CH120CAFA also detects dangerous series and parallel arcing faults to help prevent electrical fires.
Can I use the CH120CAFA on a shared neutral circuit?
No, single-pole AFCI breakers with a pigtail neutral cannot be used on multi-wire branch circuits with a shared neutral. A dedicated neutral wire is required to prevent nuisance tripping.
Does the CH120CAFA provide ground fault protection?
No, this specific model provides Combination Arc Fault (CAFCI) protection only. If the circuit requires both arc fault and ground fault protection, a dual-function breaker is necessary.
How do I test the AFCI function on the CH120CAFA?
Once installed and energized, press the white TEST button on the front of the breaker. The breaker should trip immediately, confirming that the arc fault detection circuitry is fully operational.

Got a great refurbished breaker - saved a $6500 Service Replacement
When our main breaker frizzed out, the option we were presented with was replacing the entire panel and service due to the type and part - no longer produced for replacement parts. It would be a $6500 replacement.
We'll likely have to do it at some point but, for now, the replacement breaker we were able to source from Superbreakers (with a $25 warranty) was $5900 less expensive. installation ran a few hundred dollars and the tech said the part looked to be in excellent condition and was prepped for install as he would have hoped.
