Is the CH115AF obsolete, and what is the recommended replacement?
Yes, the CH115AF is a discontinued branch/feeder AFCI. Eaton designates the CHFN115AF as the direct replacement, which upgrades the circuit to modern combination arc fault (CAFCI) protection. The CH115CAF is also a compatible combination AFCI alternative.
What level of arc fault protection does the CH115AF provide?
The CH115AF is a Branch/Feeder AFCI. It is engineered to detect parallel arcing faults, such as line-to-neutral or line-to-ground arcs. It does not include the series arc detection capabilities found in newer Combination AFCI models.
Does the CH115AF require a panel with a plug-on neutral bar?
No. This breaker is equipped with a pigtail neutral. The coiled white wire must be manually routed and terminated at the neutral bus bar, allowing it to be installed in older, non-plug-on neutral Type CH load centers.
Can the CH115AF be installed on a multi-wire branch circuit with a shared neutral?
No. Single-pole pigtail AFCI breakers like the CH115AF require a dedicated neutral for the circuit. Using it on a shared neutral will cause an imbalance in the return current, leading to immediate nuisance tripping. A two-pole AFCI is required for shared neutral applications.

Expedited Shipments

When our main breaker frizzed out, the option we were presented with was replacing the entire panel and service due to the type and part - no longer produced for replacement parts. It would be a $6500 replacement.
We'll likely have to do it at some point but, for now, the replacement breaker we were able to source from Superbreakers (with a $25 warranty) was $5900 less expensive. installation ran a few hundred dollars and the tech said the part looked to be in excellent condition and was prepped for install as he would have hoped.
