Maintaining older electrical infrastructure requires precise components like this 40A molded case breaker from Schneider Electric. Specifically configured for Federal Pioneer NB panelboards, the bolt-on design ensures a secure mechanical and electrical connection. It acts as a seamless cross-reference for the discontinued NB340 model, offering standard thermal-magnetic trip functions and a 10kAIC rating at 240VAC for dependable commercial service.
Is the NB232040FED the same circuit breaker as the NB340?
Yes, NB232040FED is the current Schneider Electric catalog number for the legacy Federal Pioneer NB340. Both numbers represent the exact same 40A, 3-pole, bolt-on circuit breaker.
Which panelboards accept the NB232040FED circuit breaker?
This breaker is designed specifically for Federal Pioneer Type NB commercial and industrial panelboards. Because it uses a bolt-on mounting design, it is not compatible with standard residential plug-on Stab-Lok load centers.
What wire sizes and materials are supported by the terminals on this breaker?
The terminal lugs on the NB232040FED accept both aluminum and copper conductors ranging from 14 AWG to 1/0 AWG.
What type of protection does the NB340 trip unit provide?
It utilizes a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit. This provides long-time (thermal) protection against overloads and instantaneous (magnetic) protection against short circuits.
Can this Federal Pioneer NB breaker be installed in a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panel?
Although Federal Pioneer and Federal Pacific Electric share the Stab-Lok lineage, this Type NB bolt-on breaker is specifically listed for Federal Pioneer NB panelboards. It should only be installed in panels where Type NB breakers are explicitly listed on the interior label.
How does the NB232040FED secure to the panelboard?
This breaker features a bolt-on connection. It fastens directly to the panelboard bus using screws, which provides a highly secure mechanical and electrical connection suited for commercial environments.
Can this 3-pole breaker be used in a single-phase panel?
No, 3-pole breakers like the NB232040FED are designed exclusively for 3-phase electrical systems. Single-phase 120/240V applications require a 1-pole or 2-pole breaker.

Hard to find breakers
Had a project at a school built in the 1960’s and thought we were up a creek when confronted with ancient FPE commercial panels. Luckily we found what we needed with Suoerbreakers.
