The FD3040 is designed for bolt-on installation in Eaton Series C panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers. It uses a standard F-frame footprint and cannot be installed in standard residential load centers.
Can the Eaton FD3040 replace an older Westinghouse or Cutler-Hammer FD3040?
Yes. Eaton acquired the Cutler-Hammer and Westinghouse circuit breaker divisions. The Eaton Series C FD3040 is a direct, drop-in replacement for older Westinghouse and Cutler-Hammer breakers that share the exact same FD3040 catalog number.
What wire size and material do the standard terminals on the FD3040 accept?
The standard lugs on this breaker accept 14 AWG to 1/0 AWG conductors. They are dual-rated, meaning they are fully compatible with both copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) wiring.
Can the FD3040 be used in direct current (DC) applications?
Yes. The FD3040 features a thermal-magnetic trip unit that is fully suitable for DC systems. It is rated for up to 250VDC with a 10kA interrupting capacity, making it appropriate for industrial DC control circuits and battery systems.
Is the FD3040 HACR rated for HVAC equipment?
Yes. All Eaton Series C F-frame circuit breakers are HACR rated. This means the FD3040 has been tested and certified for the protection of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment group motor loads.
Can the Eaton FD3040 be reverse fed?
Yes. Because this breaker utilizes a fixed thermal-magnetic, non-interchangeable trip unit without specific line and load directional restrictions, it is approved for reverse feed wiring setups.
Can I field-install internal accessories like a shunt trip in the FD3040?
No. Eaton Series C F-frame circuit breakers are factory sealed. Per UL 489 standards, internal accessories (such as shunt trips, auxiliary switches, and undervoltage releases) must be factory installed. Attempting to install them in the field breaks the seal and voids the breaker's UL listing.
Can I adjust the trip settings on the FD3040?
No. The FD3040 features a fixed thermal and fixed magnetic (LI) trip unit. The 40A Long-Time and Instantaneous protection limits are permanently set at the factory and cannot be field adjusted.

Expedited Shipments

The breaker we purchased was as advertised. The breaker fit perfectly. We purchased reconditioned breaker and it seems to be working properly, accordingly to the golf course maintenance team that supervises the irrigation system.
Next day shipping came quickly even though the 4th of July was coming.
I wish it came with new installations hardware but that isn’t a deal breaker.
