Delivering advanced electrical safety, the Eaton QB1020CAF is a 20-amp combination AFCI breaker rated for 120/240VAC. It installs into Eaton Pow-R-Line panelboards via a secure bolt-on connection, providing both series and parallel arc fault detection for commercial and industrial environments. This model replaces the older QBCAF1020 and features a pigtail neutral along with a built-in diagnostic LED to simplify trip identification. With a 10kAIC rating, it ensures continuous code compliance.
Will the QB1020CAF bolt-on breaker fit standard Eaton residential load centers?
No. The QB1020CAF is specifically designed for commercial Eaton Pow-R-Line panelboards. It features a bolt-on mounting design that is incompatible with standard plug-on residential load centers like the Eaton BR or CH series.
Can the QB1020CAF replace a standard 20-amp BAB series breaker?
Yes. If a circuit in an Eaton Pow-R-Line panelboard requires an upgrade to combination arc fault protection to meet modern electrical codes, the QB1020CAF can replace a standard 20-amp BAB breaker. Both utilize the same bolt-on mounting configuration.
How is the pigtail neutral installed on this AFCI breaker?
The white pigtail wire extending from the breaker must be landed directly on the neutral bar of the panelboard. The neutral wire from the branch circuit is then terminated at the designated load neutral lug on the breaker to complete the arc fault circuit.
What type of protection does the combination arc fault (CAFCI) technology provide?
As a Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, this breaker protects against both high-current parallel arcs and low-current series arcs. Older branch or feeder AFCI models only detected parallel arcs, making combination units safer by identifying loose connections or degraded appliance cords.
How does the diagnostic LED assist with troubleshooting tripped circuits?
The QB1020CAF features built-in trip diagnostics. After a fault, the LED blinks in specific patterns to indicate the cause of the trip, such as a mechanical overload, a low-current series arc, or a high-current parallel arc. This allows electricians to quickly isolate the issue without guessing.
Does the QB1020CAF provide Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection?
No. The QB1020CAF is a Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (CAFCI) designed exclusively to detect dangerous arcing conditions. If a circuit requires both AFCI and life-safety GFCI protection, a dual-function breaker or a downstream GFCI receptacle must be used.
