The JJA36250 is designed for Square D I-Line panelboards and switchboards. It uses a plug-on I-Line connection on the line side that attaches directly to the busbar stack, eliminating the need for separate mounting hardware or cables on the supply side.
Does the JJA36250 have an adjustable trip setting?
The thermal overload trip is fixed at 250 amps, but it features an adjustable magnetic instantaneous trip. You can adjust the short-circuit pickup range between 1250 amps and 2500 amps using the dial on the front of the breaker.
What is the difference between the JJA36250, JGA36250, and JDA36250?
All three are 250-amp, 3-pole, I-Line J-Frame breakers, but their short-circuit interrupting ratings differ. The JJA has the highest interrupting capacity at 100kA at 240V and 65kA at 480V. The JGA (65kA at 240V, 35kA at 480V) and JDA (25kA at 240V, 18kA at 480V) have lower ratings. You can substitute a JJA for a JDA or JGA, but you cannot use a lower-rated breaker if the system requires a high interrupting capacity.
How is the JJA36250 wired on the line and load sides?
The line side does not use conventional lugs. It relies entirely on the plug-on I-Line jaw connection to interface directly with the panel bus. The load side is equipped with mechanical lugs that accept 3/0 AWG to 350 kcmil aluminum or copper wire.
Is the JJA36250 rated for 100 percent continuous current?
No, this is a standard-rated circuit breaker, meaning it is rated for 80 percent continuous duty. Under continuous loads lasting three hours or more, the maximum continuous load should not exceed 200 amps.
Can the JJA36250 be used for DC overcurrent protection?
Yes. Because it utilizes a thermal-magnetic trip unit instead of an electronic one, it can be applied in DC systems. It is rated for up to 250VDC with a 20kA interrupting capacity.
What does the ABC phase configuration indicate for this breaker?
The ABC designation specifies the standard phase connections for the I-Line plug-on jaws. When pushed into the panelboard, the jaws engage the A, B, and C busbars in a standard 3-phase sequence.
How can I manually test the mechanical tripping action on the JJA36250?
The breaker includes an integral push-to-trip button on the front cover. Pressing this button mechanically trips the breaker, allowing you to verify that the internal mechanism is operating freely and to confirm the handle moves to the center tripped position before placing it in service.
