Delivering robust 3-phase power distribution, the Eaton HQP3040H is a 3-pole, 40A breaker. It provides reliable overcurrent protection for commercial HVAC systems and branch circuits. This plug-on unit installs into Eaton and legacy Westinghouse Pow-R-Line 1a panelboards. Its Quicklag design ensures a secure connection and easy replacement in 240V systems. Rated 10 kAIC at 240VAC, the device features high-magnetic trip settings. It is HACR rated for protecting heating and cooling equipment.
Which panelboards are compatible with the HQP3040H circuit breaker?
This 3-pole Quicklag breaker is designed specifically for plug-on installation in Eaton Pow-R-Line 1a and legacy Westinghouse Pow-R-Line 1a panelboards.
Is the Eaton HQP3040H interchangeable with Siemens HQP breakers?
No. While they share the HQP designation, they are entirely different product lines. The Eaton HQP is an industrial Quicklag plug-on breaker, whereas the Siemens HQP is a 65kAIC residential breaker. They cannot be used interchangeably.
What wire sizes are accepted by the HQP3040H terminals?
The box lug terminals on this 40A breaker accept wire gauges ranging from 14 AWG to 4 AWG. Eaton requires the use of wire rated for 60 or 75 degrees Celsius.
What are the terminal torque specifications for this Quicklag breaker?
Eaton specifies the following torque values based on wire size: 20 in-lbs for 14 to 10 AWG, 25 in-lbs for 8 AWG, and 27 in-lbs for 6 to 4 AWG. Always verify the exact torque printed on the side of the breaker prior to installation.
Is the HQP3040H suitable for HVAC applications?
Yes, this breaker is HACR rated, meaning it is approved for use with heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment requiring a 40A, 3-pole disconnect.
Does the HQP3040H have adjustable trip settings?
No, it features a fixed thermal-magnetic trip unit with standard Long-Time and Instantaneous (LI) protection. The trip curve cannot be adjusted.
Can I install this 240V breaker in a system with a higher fault current than 10kA?
No. The HQP3040H has a maximum interrupting rating of 10kAIC at 240VAC. Installing it in a system with an available fault current exceeding 10kA is a severe safety violation unless it is part of a tested and approved series-rated combination.
