Designed to safeguard residential electrical systems, the HOM250 delivers 50 amps of thermal-magnetic protection. This two-pole unit is frequently utilized for heavy-duty 240V branch circuits, including electric ranges, ovens, and large HVAC systems. Installation is straightforward with a plug-on design that fits exclusively into Square D Homeline load centers. The integrated box lugs accommodate 8-2 AWG aluminum or copper conductors, ensuring a secure and code-compliant connection.
Which load centers are compatible with the Square D HOM250?
The HOM250 is designed exclusively for Square D Homeline load centers and Combination Service Entrance Devices (CSEDs). It will not fit in Square D QO panels or enclosures from other manufacturers.
Can I use the HOM250 to replace a QO250 breaker?
No. Although both are 50A, 2-pole breakers manufactured by Square D, they feature entirely different form factors. The HOM250 is 1 inch wide per pole and only fits Homeline panels, while the QO250 is 0.75 inches wide per pole and fits only QO panels.
What wire size does the HOM250 accept?
The box lugs on the HOM250 are designed to accept 8 AWG through 2 AWG aluminum or copper conductors. Installers should verify they are using wire with the appropriate temperature rating per NEC requirements for the 50A load.
How many panel spaces does the HOM250 occupy?
As a standard 2-pole miniature circuit breaker in the Homeline series, the HOM250 requires two 1-inch spaces on the panel bus.
Is the HOM250 HACR rated?
Yes, it is UL Listed as an HACR (Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) type circuit breaker, making it approved for use with multi-motor HVAC systems and combination equipment loads.
Are the trip settings on the HOM250 adjustable?
No, the thermal-magnetic trip unit in the HOM250 is fixed. The long-time and instantaneous trip thresholds are factory-calibrated and cannot be modified in the field.
How does the thermal-magnetic trip mechanism in the HOM250 function?
The thermal component utilizes a bimetallic strip to provide a delayed trip response for continuous overloads. The magnetic component uses an electromagnetic assembly to trip the breaker instantaneously to clear severe short-circuit faults.
What does the 10kAIC rating mean for the installation of the HOM250?
It indicates the maximum fault current the breaker can safely interrupt at 240V without sustaining internal damage. The HOM250 must not be installed in systems where the available short-circuit current from the utility exceeds 10,000 amps.
