Built for equipment-level ground fault protection, the Siemens QE115 is a 15A, single-pole miniature breaker. It utilizes a 30mA trip threshold to safeguard machinery and heat trace cables from line-to-ground faults without nuisance tripping. This plug-on unit mounts into Siemens load centers and P1 panelboards. It accepts 14-10 AWG copper wiring and is replaced by the Q115EG in newer setups. Rated for 10kAIC at 120VAC, this thermal-magnetic breaker features a pigtail neutral.
What is the ground fault trip sensitivity of the QE115?
The QE115 is a Ground Fault Equipment Protection (GFEP) breaker with a 30mA trip sensitivity. It is designed to protect equipment from line-to-ground faults, unlike Class A GFCI breakers which trip at 5mA for personnel protection.
Which electrical panels are compatible with the QE115 breaker?
This breaker is designed for use in Siemens load centers and Siemens P1 panelboards. It is also backward compatible with many legacy ITE load centers that accept QP or QE type plug-on breakers.
How is the neutral connection wired on this breaker?
The QE115 features a pigtail neutral connection. The coiled white pigtail wire must be connected directly to the panel neutral bus bar for the ground fault protection circuitry to function properly.
Can I use the QE115 for bathroom or kitchen receptacle circuits?
No. Bathroom and kitchen receptacles require Class A GFCI protection, which trips at 5mA to protect personnel from electric shock. The QE115 is a 30mA GFEP breaker intended strictly for equipment protection, such as heat trace cables or snow melting equipment.
Does this breaker require a dedicated neutral for installation?
Yes. As a 1-pole breaker, the QE115 must be installed on a dedicated circuit with its own neutral. It cannot be used on a multi-wire branch circuit with a shared neutral, which would cause immediate nuisance tripping.
Can the QE115 pigtail breaker be installed in a newer Siemens plug-on neutral load center?
Yes. Siemens plug-on neutral load centers are designed to accept both newer plug-on neutral breakers and traditional pigtail breakers like the QE115. You simply route and terminate the pigtail wire to the neutral bar as usual.
