Designed for main service applications, the BW2200 provides 200 amps of thermal-magnetic protection for 120/240V systems. It features fixed long-time and instantaneous trip functions to defend against electrical faults in residential and commercial environments. This plug-on circuit breaker mounts into Eaton BR load centers and Type ECB unit enclosures. The integrated lugs accept 2 AWG through 300 kcmil wire sizes.
Which electrical panels are compatible with the BW2200 main breaker?
This main breaker is designed specifically for 200-amp Eaton and Cutler-Hammer Type BR load centers, as well as Type ECB unit enclosures. Always verify your panel label to confirm it accepts Type BW main breakers.
How is this main breaker secured inside the load center?
Although it features a plug-on mounting style for the electrical connection, it requires a mechanical connection to the panel bus. It secures in place using the included mounting screws and two bus torque nuts to ensure a safe, reliable installation.
What is the difference between the BW2200 and the BWH2200?
Both share the exact same physical footprint and 200-amp rating, but the BWH2200 features a higher interrupting capacity of 25 kAIC. The BW2200 is rated for standard 10 kAIC applications.
Can I use a CSR2200N to replace this breaker?
Yes, Eaton CSR and BW breakers share the same physical footprint and are generally interchangeable. However, you must ensure that your specific load center publication lists Type CSR as an acceptable main breaker before substituting.
Is this breaker suitable for continuous loads?
Standard thermal-magnetic breakers like this one are typically rated for continuous loads up to 80 percent of their maximum capacity. For a 200-amp breaker, the continuous load should not exceed 160 amps to prevent nuisance tripping and overheating.
What does the LI trip function code mean on this breaker?
The LI designation indicates that the breaker provides both Long-Time and Instantaneous trip functions. The long-time function protects against sustained overloads, while the instantaneous function trips immediately during a severe short circuit.
Can I use aluminum wire with the integrated lugs?
Yes, the factory-installed lugs are rated for both aluminum and copper conductors. When using aluminum wire, it is highly recommended to apply a specialized joint compound to prevent oxidation and ensure a secure connection.
Can this be used as a branch breaker?
No, the BW series is specifically designed to function as a main circuit breaker or primary disconnect. It is not intended for use as a standard branch circuit breaker within the panel distribution section.
